Macrae University was established in 1922 as a general technical school and is one of the oldest and most prestigious English speaking universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed the Uganda Institute of Technology, opened its doors to 14-day day students who began studying carpentry, construction and mechanics.

The College soon began offering various other courses in medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and teacher training. After many years of development, it became the center of higher education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the college began to develop into an institution of higher education, offering post-study certificate programs.

In 1949, it became an affiliated University College of University College London, offering courses leading to the general degree at what was then the Alma mater.

On 29 June 1963, the University of East Africa was established with the University of Nairobi in Kenya and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, ending the special relationship with the University of London and establishing the University of East Africa degree.

On July 1, 1970, it became an independent state university of the Republic of Uganda under the Act of Parliament and was renamed Makerere University, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to the university’s degree or other qualification. This state of affairs lasted until the enactment of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act in 2001. Makerere University not only offers day and night study courses for approximately 35,000 undergraduate students and 3,000 graduate students (Ugandan and foreign students). It is also a very active research center.

As of 30 December 2011, MacRae University was officially transformed into a collegiate university with nine constituent faculties, and as of 1 July 2014, 10 constituent faculties, including the Faculty of Law, all operate as semi-autonomous units of the University.

In December 2022, MacRae University and other universities jointly established the China-Africa Cooperation Alliance for Resources and Environmental Science and Technology Education.

The University has been the Alma mater of many post-independence African leaders, including former Ugandan President Milton Obote, former Tanzanian presidents Julius Nyerere, Benjamin Mkapa, and former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki.
