The Fashion Institute of Technology (State University of New York) is an internationally renowned fashion and art design school. Founder Mortimer C. FIT’s conference center houses the John E. Reeves Great Hall, a suitable venue for conferences, fashion shows, lectures and other events. The campus also houses two large theaters: the Haft Auditorium and the Katie Murphy Amphitheatre.
Three of the four residence halls are located on campus and can accommodate approximately 2,300 students, offering a variety of different types of accommodation facilities. There is also the George S. and Mariana Kaufman residence building at 406 West 31st Street, a former bookbinding factory that has been converted into residential apartments to provide FIT students with more housing close to campus. The campus also features a retail food court/restaurant, deli, and Starbucks coffee shop.
The Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Cente offers design research facilities: Photography studio with black and white darkroom, painting room, sculpture studio, plate room, graphics lab, display and design room, sketch room and model making workshop. The Shirley Goodman Resource Center houses the FIT Museum and library/media service, which provides references in history, sociology, technology, art and literature; International journals and magazines; Sketchbooks and records donated by designers, manufacturers and businessmen; Slides, tapes and journals; And newspaper clippings. The Gladys Marcus Library offers books, journals, DVDS, and non-print materials, and houses the Fashion Institute of Technology Special Collection and the College Archive. FIT also has a number of computer LABS for student use. The Instructional Media Services division provides audio visual and television support and has an in-house TV studio. Student work is also displayed throughout the campus. A fashion show showcasing the work of graduating B.F.A. students is held each academic year.
The Design/Research Lighting Lab is a development facility for interior design and other academic fields with 400 commercial lighting installations controlled by computers. The Annette Green/Perfume Foundation Lab is an environment for research in perfume development.
FIT’s new building, the first academic addition to the campus in more than 40 years, is currently under construction, with most completion expected in early 2024 and scheduled to open in the summer of 2024. The building will create an advanced learning environment, providing new opportunities for design and business innovation. The project has received financial support from the state of New York and the City of New York, as well as a group of FIT friends and supporters. The project was unanimously endorsed by Community Council 5 (CB5).
