The school boasts that 98 percent of its seniors are employed or further educated before graduation.

The history of Kettering University is closely linked to the development of the American automobile industry. When Albert Sobey founded the school on October 20, 1919, under the name “Auto Trade School,” his goal was to establish a night school to foster local industrial partnerships in Flint, with the aim of training and developing people for industrial careers. In 1923, the school was renamed the Flint Institute of Technology. General Motors took over the school on July 12, 1926, and renamed it the General Motors Institute of Technology. In 1932, the school’s name was shortened to General Motors Institute.

The General Motors Academy (GMI) focuses on preparing business leaders (known as the West Point of industry) and has pioneered many educational firsts, including the paid internship program (which began at the University of Cincinnati in 1907), the freshman manufacturing program (Production Process I and II), and the automotive degree program. In 1945, with the ability to award degrees, the school added a five-year thesis requirement. The first bachelor’s degree was awarded on August 26, 1946.

The paid internship program requires applicants to find a division of General Motors as their sponsor. Work and study are arranged into A six-week cycle, and students are divided into A-Section students and B-section students. During the semester, while students in semester A attend school, students in semester B work in companies. After six weeks, B students go back to school, A students go to work, and so on. This arrangement allows students to travel to and from campus eight times a year, and to work and study for 48 weeks a year. Because General Motors uses the school to train good engineers, tuition is partially subsidized.

In June 1980, the paid internship period was extended to twelve weeks. After GM reduced its presence in Flint, both GM and GM Academy became independent on July 1, 1982, although GM continued to employ GM Academy students in its paid internship program. The name of the school was changed to “GMI Engineering & Management Institute”, although the letter “GMI” is still reminiscent of the former General Motors Institute. Student employees of the new paid internship program began to be assigned to other companies besides GM, including Magna International in Canada, and now Kettering University paid internships can be assigned to the United States, Germany, China, Mexico and many other countries and regions. At the same time, schools began charging full tuition.

On January 1, 1998, the name of the school was officially changed to Kettering University. The reasons for the school’s name change are as follows:

One, to create a new identity separate from General Motors and the auto industry; To avoid confusion with General Motors University, a training, research and development center established by General Motors in 1997; Three, in honor of Charles Kettering, one of the great inventors of the 20th century, an advocate of paid internships, and an early benefactor of the school.
