The first class of this university is held at Palm Beach High School in West Palm Beach. County School Superintendent Joe Youngblood and Palm Beach High School Principal Howell Watkins became the college’s first deans and were instrumental in opening the university. The academy’s original goal was to provide more training to local secondary school graduates who couldn’t find work during the Great Depression.
In 1948, Palm Beach Junior College moved to Morrison Field, a defunct Army Air Force base that is now Palm Beach International Airport. In 1951, the college relocated to Lake Park City Hall. The college has had to cut jobs and layoffs and slash the enrolment of 200 students due to limited space in the town hall. During this time, Palm Beach Junior College was known as the “Little Orphans College.” In 1955, the Palm Beach County Commission gave the college 114 acres (46 hectares) of land in Lake Worth and the state legislature passed a bill that provided more than $1,000,000 in funding for the site’s construction. In the fall of 1956, the college moved here and remains its main campus.
