In 1874, Sir Walter Highest, a farmer in South Australia, proposed the establishment of a university in the state, hoping to “enable students who have received high school to further their education.” The University of Adelaide was formally established on 6 November with the help of a $20,000 donation from the State Government and various communities, and from Sir Walter Hughes and businessman Thomas Elder.
