The history of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University can be traced back to 1937 with the establishment of the Hong Kong Government Advanced Institute of Technology, located in Wood Road, Wan Chai, which was the first government-funded institution in Hong Kong to provide post-secondary engineering education. Under the leadership of President Mr. G. White, the college offered courses in Marine radio operations, mechanical engineering and architecture.

After the Second World War, the college was renamed the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute in 1947, offering full-time and part-time courses. In 1956, with a donation of $1 million from the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong and the support of government funds and land allocation, the construction of the Hung Hom school building was officially started. In 1957, it was opened by Sir Grantham, Governor of Hong Kong, marking a new chapter in the history of industrial education in Hong Kong.

In 1965, Dr Chung Shi-yuen (now Sir Chung Shi-yuen) proposed the establishment of a polytechnic in Hong Kong at the Legislative Council meeting of that year. In May 1969, the Committee was formally established under the chairmanship of the late Dr. Tang Ping-yuen.

The Government subsequently adopted the final report of the Committee, and with the commencement of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Ordinance on 24 March 1972, the first Polytechnic Council was established under the chairmanship of Dr Chung Shi-yuen. At the invitation of the Council, Sir Maclehose was appointed as the first honorary Superintendent; Mr Charles Old was appointed as the first Dean of the Institute.

On 1 August 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic (Polyu) was formally established, taking over the premises and staff of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute, with the mission of providing professional programmes and nurturing talents to meet the demand for professional talents in the community. Previously, the total number of full-time, day part-time and night part-time students in the eight teaching departments of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute was 1,700, 740 and 9,340 respectively.

Most of the technical courses of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute have been transferred to Morrison Hill Polytechnic, which was established in 1969, while the Polytechnic has continuously upgraded its teaching quality to the level of the Institute. Since then, the Institute has continued to grow and expand. In 1983, the first five bachelor’s degree programmes were introduced, followed by master’s and doctoral programmes in 1986 and 1989 respectively.

On 25 November 1994, PolyU was granted self-accreditation status by the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee and was officially named “The Hong Kong Polytechnic University”.
