The college’s main campus is located in Holborn, the legal center of the City of London, close to the Royal Court, the British Broadcasting Corporation and the four major London law schools (the most famous of which, Lincoln’s Law School, is within easy reach), occupying an area roughly between the West End of London and the City of London. The British Museum, the University of London headquarters, the Senate House Library and a number of small specialized libraries are not far from the school, and less than a mile from the campus is the UK’s main government, legal, financial and media centers, these institutions are the “real” research objects of the school.
Compared with UCL, KCL, IC and other schools, the accommodation conditions of LSE are poor, and most of the students need to apply for inter-university dormitory provided by the University of London or directly choose to live in an off-campus rental. However, the situation has improved, and the completion of the new campus (adjacent to the main campus) has increased the number of residence halls to about 2,800, which can meet the needs of most new undergraduate and third-year students. The London School of Economics arranges student accommodation in its student apartments, which are distributed in ten different areas of central London. More than 3,400 students live in student housing. In addition, about 25% of new undergraduate students live in London University interuniversity accommodation.
The university guarantees that all new undergraduate students and some postgraduate students can live in student housing, but like most other universities in London, LSE does not provide accommodation on campus. Depending on the location, the nearest High Holborn apartment is only a 10-minute walk from the school (Grosvenor House will no longer provide accommodation for the LSE from the 2020/21 academic year), while the farthest apartment takes at least 45 minutes either by tube or bus. Most of the student housing on the LSE is mixed with students of different nationalities, races and genders. Student housing on the LSE typically offers 39 – or 50-week rental contracts.
Bankside, the college’s largest student residence, was completed in 1996 and can accommodate 617 students. It is adjacent to the south bank of the Thames River and the famous Tate Modern art Gallery is located next to it. Built in 1995, High Holborn is the second largest student residence at the College and is located about a 10-minute walk from the main campus. Other apartments are also located in better parts of the city: Butler’s Wharf apartments are located next to Tower Bridge, Rosebery apartments are located in bustling Islington, and Carl-Saunders apartments, named after a former professor at the College, are located in the affluent West End, next to the London TV Tower. Since 2005, the university has built three new student housing facilities to accommodate all incoming undergraduate students. Lilian Knowles, which opened in 2006, can accommodate 360 students, and the new Northumberland Street student House, which opened in October 2006, is close to Trafalgar Square and the River Thames, close to the famous business districts of Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circle, London’s Chinatown, Covent Garden Square and numerous West End theatres. It is also a Grade II-listed building that was once a luxury hotel in Victorian times before being requisitioned by the government as office space.
