The University of Hong Kong is the first university in Hong Kong. It was founded on Hong Kong Island in 1911 by the merger of the Hong Kong College of Western Medicine, established in 1887, and the Hong Kong Government Technical College. Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first graduate of the Hong Kong College of Western Medicine.
At that time, the Western powers were competing to establish universities in China, and the then Governor of Hong Kong, Lu Yi, believed that the United Kingdom also needed to establish a university in Hong Kong, to compete with other powers, and to allow the Chinese people (especially the people of Hong Kong) to identify with British values and compete with the cultural ideas of other powers, so as to facilitate the expansion of British power in southern China and consolidate its rule over Hong Kong. At the same time, an industrial accident occurred on a cargo ship operated by the Swire Group, resulting in the deaths and injuries of a number of Chinese sailors, and the management was eager to repair the image of the company, so they jointly donated money to fund the establishment of HKU. With the support of the British government and other British investors in Hong Kong, such as HSBC, Lu eventually raised enough money to fund the university and presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony on 16 March 1910.
