Simon Fraser University is named after Simon Fraser, a trader and explorer from the Northwest Group of Canada. In 1962, John B. Macdonald made a report on education and future plans in British Columbia, and he recommended the establishment of a new university in the mainland Lowlands of British Columbia. On March 1, 1963, the British Columbia Legislature formally approved the establishment of Simon Fraser University University in Burnaby, Vancouver. In May of the same year, at the suggestion of the first president, Gordon M. Shrum, the provincial government decided to establish the campus on Burnaby Hill, 365 meters above sea level. In the spring of 1964, construction began on the building and campus designed by architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey. On September 9, 1965, Simon Fraser University welcomed its first class of 2,500 students.

As of 2016, Simon Fraser University has 29,591 undergraduate students, of whom 14,911 are full-time students. With the rapid development of the school, it has trained more than 130,000 graduates. SFU currently has 946 teachers and 3,403 employees. In the fall semester of 2012, 4,269 international students were enrolled, increasing SFU’s undergraduate population by 17 per cent and making it one of the largest universities in Canada in terms of undergraduate enrollments. The Student union is called the Simon Fraser Student Society(SFSS).

Simon Fraser University has three campuses located in three different cities in Greater Vancouver. The main Campus is located on the Burnaby Campus hill, the Vancouver Campus is located in the high-rises of downtown Vancouver, and the Surrey Campus is located in the City Center shopping mall. In recent years, the Vancouver Campus has been expanded, for example, by the Siegel Graduate School of Economics.

All three campuses are directly accessible by public transport. The Vancouver campus is one block from Waterfront Sky Station. The Surrey campus is close to Surrey Central Station, and the Burnaby Campus is connected to the Production Way-University Station and Sperling-Burnaby Lake Station by a shuttle service.
