The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) grew out of a vocational school founded in Pasadena in 1891 by local businessman and politician Amos G. Terroop. Before receiving the name Caltech in 1920, the school was known as Throop University, Throop Technical College, and Throop Technical College. The force that drove Caltech from a school of arts and crafts to a world-class science center was the prescience of astronomer George Ellery Hale. Hale joined Throop’s board of trustees after coming to Pasadena in 1907, serving as the first director of the Mount Wilson Observatory.
