1956-1965 Rural & Industrial Development Authority (RIDA) Training Centre

The RIDA(RIDA) Training Centre is the result of a visit to Ceylon Rural Development Programme by Datto Ang Jafar, founder and former president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), in 1951 (now Sri Lanka). The resulting working paper Outlines the establishment of the RIDA(Rural and Industrial Development Authority) and its objectives for rebuilding rural society and improving the rural economy. There are two centres under RIDA :Taman Asuhan RIDA(Kuala Lumpur) and Dewan Lighthan RIDA(Petaling Jaya). Dewan Latehan RIDA began its operations in November 1956 under the first headmaster Tuan Syed Alwi Bin Syed Syed Sheikh Alhadi. It was started on 14 February 1957 by Dewan Latehan RIDA, who chaired several external professional courses run by established international bodies such as the London Chamber of Commerce, the Chartered Secretarial Society of Australia, the Institute of Accountants Australia and the UK Institute of Management.

1965-1967 MARA College (MARA College)

Dewan Latehan RIDA became known as Maktab MARA or MARA Academy in June 1965, the name change also meant that the Academy was no longer run by RIDA, but became the most important unit of MARA’s Training Department. The role and responsibilities of RIDA were taken over and strengthened on behalf of the “Majlis Amanah Rakakat” or the “Indigenous Peoples Trust Council”. In 1966, the UK School of Management ceased to conduct external examinations and MARA College began to operate its own Diploma in Business Studies. International recognition for the course came from Ealing Technical College of London, which also became the external examination body for the college.

1967-1999 Institute Of Technology MARA

Mara College officially changed its name to Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) on October 14, 1967.

The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) has grown rapidly in recent years and its educational programmes have been continuously expanded to meet the requirements of the increasingly tough job market. Many of the programs are international affiliates, and the college offers advanced diploma programs, which are equivalent to general degrees.

The development of ITM is best seen in three phases, spanning 32 years. The first phase (1967-1976) came with the announcement that the College had its own 300-acre campus in Shah Alam and was placed under the autonomous authority of the Ministry of Rural Development.

The second phase (1976-1996) saw ITM rapidly capitalise on its potential as an institution of higher learning. This led to the passage of the ITM Act of 1976, which placed the Institute under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education.

The third phase (1996-1999) was the result of amendments to the 1976 Act which put ITM on an equal footing with all universities in the country. The ITM has been granted all the powers of a university for practical purposes. But its historical name remained until August 26, 1999, when ITM was authorized to award Doctorates (Ph.D.).

August 1999 University of Technology MARA(UiTM)

In August 1999, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, announced that ITM would be renamed Mara Polytechnic University of Technology MARA(UiTM), and recognized by the Government, the authorities undertook a major restructuring exercise to consolidate the university’s resources in terms of optimal productivity.

Mara Polytechnic University Act No. 173 (Act 173)

Act No. 173, drafted in conjunction with the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union, is considered essential as it provides guidelines for the maintenance and smooth administration and other related matters, serves as a basis for recognizing the transition of the institution from a college to a university, and gives the institution the power to exercise its functions on a par with other universities. This includes offering courses and awarding degrees at all levels.
