In 1990, the Department of Astronomy was established, making CSUN the only campus in the California State system to offer an astronomy program. In 1992, Blenda Wilson became the first black female principal in the United States. In 1994, Northridge was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that severely damaged the campus. In 1995, President Clinton visited the school one year after the earthquake. In 2001, the school’s men’s basketball team became a dark horse, reaching the NCAA Basketball National Top 64 for the first time. In 2003, the football team disbanded.
