The history of the University of Newcastle can be traced back to 1834 when the School of Medicine was established by the city of Newcastle, offering lectures and experimental surgical courses to 26 students at the time. In June 1851, the school split into two rival colleges. The main College formed the Newcastle College of Medicine, The other College was established as the Newcastle upon Tyne College of Medicine and Practical Science.
In 1852, Newcastle Medical School was formally merged with King’s College, The Federal University of Durham, The first “Licence in Medicine: Lic.Med” was granted in 1856, and the two colleges were later merged in 1857 and renamed Durham College of Medicine in 1870.
In order to provide a place for the teaching of science in the city, the College for the teaching of mathematics, physics, chemistry and earth sciences became the Durham College of Physical Sciences in 1883 and was named Armstrong College in 1904 after William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong. These independent or split-off colleges later became The Federal University of Durham, which was officially recognised in 1908 and split into two departments based in the two cities of Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne. By 1908, Newcastle-upon-Tyne departments such as medicine, art, and science, including agriculture and engineering, taught a wide range of subjects.
By the early 20th century, the two-city Durham Federal University system had become untenable, and in 1963 it was split into two universities, Newcastle University and Durham University, by an Act of Parliament.
